Mandheling coffee is named after the Mandailing people who inhabit northern Sumatra. Sumatra is Indonesia’s large, westernmost island. It is home to a wide range of tropical flora, fauna, and microclimates. Farms on Sumatra are typically 0.5 to 2.5 hectares and scattered across remote regions. They are connected by a network of collectors, processors, traders, and exporters that together push the coffee into the global supply chain.
Sumatran coffee dominates Indonesia’s coffee industry with 60-70% of the country’s total coffee volume being produced here. Our Sumatra Mandheling coffee beans come from smallholders in the Aceh province, where rich soil and high altitudes make up an ideal environment for growing Arabica coffee. Sumatra coffee production has a long history, extending to the 17th century when the Dutch East India Company imported coffee plants to Indonesia.
In this coffee we taste notes of Molassas, Cocoa and Black Licorice
